What's the best time of year to treat roof moss in Victoria?

Victoria's climate makes the timing decision unusually clean. The rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains gives the city the driest summers on the BC coast, with weeks in July and August when a roof in Fairfield or James Bay is bone dry, and the switch to the wet season in October is abrupt. Moss companies here are booked solid from April to June and again in September, which is the other reason to plan: a May slot booked in February is easy, a May slot booked in May is not.

Shade changes the calendar slightly. A north-facing roof under Douglas firs in Saanich or a Highlands roof in a cedar hollow may not dry fully until June, so an early-season treatment there can be washed off by a late April storm before it acts; those roofs do better with a June or September visit. Sellers listing in the spring market often treat in the previous September so the roof is clean and the dead moss has washed away by the time the inspector arrives in March.

Most roof moss treatments need a dry surface to apply to and a rain-free period afterwards so they are not diluted and washed into the gutters before they act.
